ST-Ericsson Demos U8500 at 1.2GHz. Attempting to rebound from a dismal 2009, ST-Ericsson disclosed several advances at MWC, most of which will impact the company's revenue in 2011 and beyond. The most impressive was a demonstration of the U8500 running its two Cortex-A9 CPUs at 1.2GHz each. ST-Ericsson was a multinational manufacturer of wireless products and semiconductors, supplying to mobile device manufacturers. ST-Ericsson was a 50/50 joint venture of Ericsson and STMicroelectronics established on 3 February 2009 and dissolved 2 August 2013. Headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, it was a fabless company, outsourcing semiconductor manufacturing to foundry companies. Both Ericsson and STMicroelectronics appointed four directors to the board with Hans Vestberg, President and CEO. Today at Mobile World Congress, Rx Networks Inc., a leading mobile location technology company, in partnership with ST-Ericsson, a leader in wireless platforms and semiconductors, announced a successful integration of Rx Networks’ software and services for GLONASS, GPS, Wi-Fi®, and Cell-ID based positioning onto the ST-Ericsson NovaThor™ U8500 platform. 2003-05-19 Application filed by ST Ericsson SA filed Critical ST Ericsson SA 2003-05-19 Priority to PCT/IB2003/001910 priority patent/WOA1/en 2004-11-18 Assigned to KONINKLIJKE PHILIPS ELECTRONICS N.V. Rx Networks and ST-Ericsson Demonstrate GPS/GLONASS/Wi-Fi/Cell-ID Positioning At Mobile World Congress

ST-Ericsson's 3-GHz, dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 based NovaThor L8580 isn't a gimmick, said Marc Cetto, the company's senior vice president of 3G multimedia platforms.

The NovaThor U8500 is the first integrated smartphone platform to offer the latest Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP) dual core technology in a high-performance, low-power and cost-optimized solution for multiple operating systems. Starting next month, the U8500 will feature the CG2905 multi-function connectivity chip – announced today at Mobile World Congress – which adds GLONASS support to the 2900 series of GNSS, FM, and Bluetooth® combos.

Rx Networks has integrated its GPStream PGPS™ product with the ST-Ericsson CG2905, demonstrating times to first location fix of just a few seconds for the GLONASS and GPS constellations. In addition, the U8500 has been integrated with Rx Networks’ XYBRID RT™ service, adding Wi-Fi and Cell-ID based positioning capability that will simplify software integration and validation for customers using the NovaThor U8500 platform.

“The combination of the U8500 platform with GPStream PGPS and XYBRID RT makes for a very impressive user experience,” commented Adrian Stimpson, Sr. Vice-President, Sales & Marketing for Rx Networks. “With the CG2905’s addition of GLONASS support, the final handset or mobile device will be able to see a greater number of satellites in difficult conditions and environments like valleys and urban canyons, where sky visibility is limited. Add to this Wi-Fi and cellular positioning, and the user will get a fix every time, whether indoors or out.”

“Hybrid positioning techniques, which combine any available signals to determine location, are fast becoming the design of choice for smartphone manufacturers ,” said Nick Taluja, Head of Connectivity Marketing for ST-Ericsson. “As getting a fast and reliable location is an essential feature of today’s mobile devices, by working with Rx Networks the ST-Ericsson U8500 can now support hybrid positioning combining GPS, GLONASS, Cell-ID and Wi-Fi on a single platform.. Pre-integration of the Rx Networks’ PGPS and XYBRID RT on the U8500 will enable handset manufacturers to have a complete radio and location platform that can be designed into a smartphone in the shortest possible time.”

To experience the ST-Ericsson CG2905 working with GPStream PGPS and XYBRID RT, please visit the Rx Networks booth at Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona.

Major carrier China Mobile and HTC have just announced the first smartphone to be delivered with ST-Ericsson’s latest NovaThor platform, the HTC Sensation Z710t.

Unlike the original HTC Sensation, which features Qualcomm's MSM 8260 chipset, the Sensation Z710t comes with a slightly lower 1GHz dual-core processor, but the rest of the specs are similar.

HTC Sensation Z710t is fully compatible with China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network, allowing users to browse at broadband speed across a large part of the country.

In addition, ST-Ericsson's new NovaThor platform promises to offer immersive 3D graphics, along with fast web browsing and state of the art multimedia.

Users will be able to run several complex Android apps at the same time with high performance and battery life.

ST-Ericsson’s new NovaThor platform has enabled us to develop a world-class Android smartphone for China Mobile’s TD network. Consumers are going to be captivated by the fast and responsive multimedia experience delivered by the HTC Sensation Z710t,” said Matthew Costello, Chief Operating Officer of HTC.

ST-Ericsson’s chipset comprises a Nova A9500 dual-core application processor clocked at 1GHz, as well as a Thor M6718 modem.

Furthermore, the HTC Sensation Z710t boasts the same 8-megapixel camera with autofocus, dual-LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording capabilities.
